The map data shown in the main map window changes automatically in accordance with the viewing level, i.e. the scale. The data shown in each map appears as selected on the left side of the map, in the section “Data to be shown”. A certain type of map data (map layer) can also be selected by clicking the corresponding selection button. You can move across the map by using the directional arrow in the upper left corner.
The map may also be panned by keeping the left button on the mouse depressed and moving the mouse at the same time. The scale level of the map can be changed by pressing the map control tool function links:
= zoom in
= zoom out.
If using a mouse with a wheel button, you can use the wheel to zoom in and out. An alternating scale bar and scale can be seen in the bottom left corner of the map. The mouse cursor coordinates are also visible in the lower area of the map. The system of coordinates is WGS84, in which N/Lat. refers to north latitude and E/Lon. is east longitude, expressed as degrees. You can return to the starting map view by clicking the ”Karjalan kartat” (Karelian Maps) logo or this function link:
= return to starting view.
Due to the historical background of the maps, some of them do not cover the entire Karelian area. Sometimes you may receive an error message from the map server stating that the map is not available, or the area may be shown in black or white. Such maps and in the scale required have never been produced.
The index map is the small map of Karelia in the lower right corner of the main map. The location of the main map’s window map is indicated on the index map with a red-bordered rectangle. You can indicate the section you want to be shown in the main map window by dragging the rectangle to the place you wish. The index map can, as required, be reduced so that it is no longer visible by clicking the index map - link.
The original explanations of map symbols from historical map data, i.e. legends, can be found from their own PDF files:
By selecting the check box ”Show information from the map”, additional historical information connected with the area in the section chosen from the map sheet is presented on the left (lower part) of the map. This function works only when the Search tab is selected. In the metadata, the name and measurement year of the map sheet and the names of the measurers and cartographers are listed. Please note! Not all map sheets of the Karelia region have this information available.
Enter the name of the place you are searching for in the text field. You can enter the entire name or the first three letters of the word at minimum. You can restrict the search to the type of name system chosen. The area seen on the map can also function as a limiting element in the search: in this case, select “Limit search to the area displayed”.
The place name search is based on the name system contained in Topographical map 1:20 000 and Municipal map 1:20 000. The search results are shown on the list, and they are composed of the following:
place name, map sheet name, (T) topographical map or (P) municipal map, name system
By clicking on the place name on the list, the map centres on the vicinity of the place name concerned.
With this function, you can set a map link on the map which you can copy and save. You can then send it by email or connect it as a link to your own website.
Making a link is done as follows:
When the created link is used, the map window with text opens to the view indicated by the link. This way, the map data in the background remains the same as when the link was created.
With the coordinates function, the coordinates compatible with the navigators on the chosen target (WGS84) are clarified.
The map can also be centred on the desired coordinate point by entering the coordinates in the text boxes. The coordinates should be given in the following form:
dd.dddd
in which ”dd” refers to degrees, and ”dddd” the decimal parts of the degree.
After this, click the “Centre” button.
The application checks the technical accuracy of the form of the given coordinates. If required, metadata concerning the set of coordinates and their adaptations can be found on the National Land Survey of Finland’s web pages from » Land information » Coordinates and elevation systems.
Please note! Due to the data, the coordinates may indicate different points on different maps. The coordinates obtained from the data are not completely precise.
